Mission

SkillBuild’s goal is to create a peer-to-peer social network where kids can teach and learn skills from one another. We believe that every kid has their “thing,” or something they can share with others. Whether their “thing” is scoring a soccer goal, understanding Shakespeare, or solving algebra problems, SkillBuild believes that kids are in a unique position to teach their peers, and other kids are excited to learn from them! Our safe, friendly, and fun online platform gives students the opportunity to do just that. Through skills exchange, we hope this platform enables kids from different communities and backgrounds to interact with each other and even make friends with those they otherwise may not have interacted with.

You can participate in SkillBuild in two different ways - either one, through a live partnership with another kid, or two, by sharing video lessons with SkillBuild’s online community via our website. As an educational platform, we help pair kids based on their skills, interests, and what they want to learn and offer other students. Our pairing system helps introduce students into SkillBuild’s larger learning community and make education collaborative and fun!

Who We Are

Letter from the Founder

SkillBuild was started in Cambridge, MA in 2020 by Jayan Gandhi, a student at Buckingham Browne & Nichols High School. After years of website development through self-teaching content, conducting focus groups with students in different communities, tutoring sessions to pilot the program and meetings with school and community leaders, SkillBuild is finally ready to scale and go to a phase 2 launch. We hope you’ll join us!

How SkillBuild Works

It’s easy to join and use SkillBuild! Simply create a profile with your name, email address, grade and school. You may optionally upload a picture of yourself. Then simply click populate skills you would like to teach and those you would like to learn by choosing from the 6 categories:

You may choose up to 4 skills to teach, and 4 to learn.  If you choose to learn a skill, simply add it to your profile and then click on it to find teachers. Alternatively use the search function to find the skill. All teachers will then be listed. Use the message button to send a note to any teacher you’d like. Teachers should respond with their availability and the learner and teacher can arrange for a time to set up a virtual learning session. It’s as simple as that!

In the next phase of the launch (phase 3), we will add ways of tracking the number of teaching and learning sessions in which you participate. You’ll receive points that might enable you to win prizes! In the meantime, we hope you enjoy learning and teaching skills and meeting peers!
